Palestine Solidarity Conference
On Oct. 15-17, 2004, the Palestine Solidarity Movement (PSM) held its national conference at Duke University, sparking extensive discussion on campus and more widely. The university was criticized by some for agreeing to host the conference and praised by others for promoting free speech. This site examines how the controversy led students and others at Duke to take a closer look at the underlying conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians, and at issues such as academic freedom and terrorism.

The Politics of Academic Freedom: Does Political Affiliation Matter?
On Monday, February 9, 2004, the Duke Conservative Union placed an advertisement in The Duke Chronicle claiming that the university lacked intellectual diversity. The advertisement noted the preponderance of registered Democrats among deans and in departments in the humanities and social sciences. This advertisement prompted reportage and commentary in the media, and the Office of the Provost, along with student political groups, decided to sponsor a March 1, 2004, panel discussion to address the issues. This web page gathers coverage of the issue and of the panel discussion.
