The 2006 Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Committee invites the Duke and Durham community to join in commemorating the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. through the theme of "Call and Response: Listening, Learning, and Living the Legacy." The theme emphasizes both King’s call as a moral leader and the courageous response of ordinary people that gave his vision power. Learn more about this year’s theme.

Harry Belafonte to Speak at Duke for 2006 Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration
A friend and ally of King's during the Civil Rights Movement, Belafonte will be the keynote speaker at a service at Duke Chapel celebrating King's legacy at 3 p.m. on Sun., Jan. 15, 2006.
 
‘Speak Truth to Power’ Human Rights Play to Honor MLK Legacy
The play, by Ariel Dorfman, is based on testimonies from human rights activists collected by Kerry Kennedy Cuomo in her book "Speak Truth to Power: Human Rights Defenders Who Are Changing Our World."
 
Film Director Charles Stone III to Present Movies, MLK Message at Duke
Film director Charles Stone III ("Mr. 3000" and "Drumline") will show clips from his movies and discuss how King’s legacy has shaped his work on Friday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m. in the Richard White Auditorium. The presentation "Race, Fantasy, Reality: Success in Black and White" is free and open to the public.

"We have such problems with poverty and what is happening to the disenfranchised," Belafonte said in an interview with "This Month at Duke." "As long as these things are part of the central agony of America, I think Dr. King will always be evoked as a model of what we try to follow as we try to seek solutions and resolve the great American dilemma of race."
