Thomas Friedman Tickets Sold Out; Tickets Available for Simulcast in Reynolds

DURHAM, NC -- Pulitzer-Prize-winning author and New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman will speak Sept. 22 at Duke University about the topic of his new book, “Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution and How It Can Renew America.”
Friedman will deliver the 2008 Terry Sanford Distinguished Lecture at 5:30 p.m. in Page Auditorium on Duke University’s West Campus. The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. Tickets may be obtained through the Duke Box Office, online at www.tickets.duke.edu, or by phone at (919) 684-4444.
Beginning at 4 p.m., Friedman will sign copies of his latest book in Page Auditorium (tickets are not required).
“How do our kids compete in a flatter world? How do they thrive in a warmer world? How do they survive in a more dangerous world? Those are, in a nutshell, the big questions facing America at the dawn of the 21st century,” Friedman says. “I have an idea how. It’s called ‘green.’ ”
The world needs breakthroughs in green energy technology to face these challenges, Friedman says. He plans to discuss how America can be the leader in the next big global industry of clean technology through an ambitious national strategy he has dubbed a “Green New Deal.”
Friedman is the author of the best-selling books “The World is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century” and “The Lexus and the Olive Tree: Understanding Globalization.” His latest book, “Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution and How It Can Renew America,” has been scheduled for publication in September.
The Terry Sanford Distinguished Lecture was endowed by a gift to the university from the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust in honor of the late Terry Sanford, who served as North Carolina governor, U.S. senator and Duke president. He also founded Duke’s Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy.
