Li-Chen Chin, the former director of international programs at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, is the new director of Duke University’s International House.

“Li-Chen has an impressive resume, with an extensive list of scholarly work based on her experience with international student issues,” said Zoila Airall, assistant vice president for student affairs at Duke. “But even more impressive is her dedication and her service to students, and her advocacy on their behalf.”

At Bryn Mawr, Chin built and implemented support programs for international students, staff and faculty, and led the study abroad and international partnership programs for the university. She also was a lecturer for seminar courses on health and wellness for first-year students.

“Duke’s students come from more than 48 countries,” said Vice President for Student Affairs Larry Moneta. “This international representation on campus is a large part of what makes Duke the great university that it is, and something the university is dedicated to supporting and connecting with our domestic student population. Li-Chen has an important role on campus, and I have every confidence she will well serve Duke’s international community.”

Prior to her tenure at Bryn Mawr, Chin was the international student and scholar adviser at the University of Pennsylvania, and served in similar roles at Michigan State University and the University of Oregon.

Chin recently completed a three-year term as chair of the Association of International Educators Region VIII, where she oversaw a team of experts dedicated to influencing international education policy. She is a frequent speaker on international scholar issues at conferences and workshops.

“For an international student, becoming part of a community that is so different from your own presents unique challenges,” Chin said. “The whole team at the International House and at Duke in general, including myself, is dedicated to giving international students everything they need to be successful here on campus, and wherever their interests lead them.”

Chin received her bachelor of arts degree in music from National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, Taiwan, and her Ph.D. in music education and research from the University of Oregon.
