Duke University President Richard H. Brodhead announced Tuesday that he is recommending to the university’s Board of Trustees that two of the university’s senior administrators -- Provost Peter Lange and Chancellor for Health Affairs Victor J. Dzau, M.D. -- be reappointed to five-year terms.

Lange is being recommended for his third five-year term as the university’s senior academic officer. Dzau is being recommended for his second five-year term as leader of Duke Medicine, including the post of CEO and President of the Duke University Health System.

In an e-mail to faculty and staff leaders announcing the reappointments, Brodhead praised Lange and Dzau for their vision, leadership and commitment to the welfare of Duke.

“Peter Lange has been a superb academic leader whose vision has been instrumental in shaping and implementing the university’s strategic academic priorities and securing broad support for them among the deans, faculty, students, trustees, and alumni,” Brodhead said in his e-mail. “He has earned the confidence of the university community and been a wise counselor to both presidents he has served.

“Since his appointment in 2004, Victor Dzau has brought remarkable energy, dedication, and vision to the leadership of Duke Medicine’s clinical and educational enterprises,” Brodhead’s e-mail continued. “Under his direction, our Health System and Schools of Medicine and Nursing have continued to excel at their triple mission of research, teaching and training, and patient care, while adjusting to new challenges in strategic ways. He too has been an important advisor to the President and has helped build new levels of collaboration between the health system and the university.”

Brodhead said the reappointments follow periodic administrative reviews of both Lange and Dzau. Duke conducts regular reviews -- usually every five years -- of deans, officers and senior administrative leaders.

Professor Randall Kramer of the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences chaired a committee of faculty, administrators and trustees that recently completed the review of Lange, who has served as provost since 1999. The committee reviewing Dzau was chaired by Christopher Willett, M.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology.

Brodhead said, “Significant accomplishments under Chancellor Dzau’s and Provost Lange’s leadership have enhanced Duke’s regional, national and international position and reputation.”

As provost, Lange has guided the university through two five-year strategic plans, “Making a Difference” (2006) and “Building on Excellence” (2001), that helped strengthen Duke’s faculty and grow Duke’s distinctive qualities. He also oversaw program planning for the new campus expansion that is now underway and convened the group that developed DukeEngage, Duke’s showcase program of student engagement.

Under Dzau’s leadership, Duke established the Duke Translational Medicine Institute to expedite the translation of new scientific discoveries into clinical practice. Vigorous growth in research activity in recent years has made Duke the country’s second highest recipient of National Institutes of Health funding. Dzau has championed a global heath agenda, including the creation of the Duke–National University of Singapore Graduate Medical School, and he spearheaded with Lange a campus-wide, multidisciplinary global health initiative to address health inequalities throughout the world.

Brodhead said he plans to bring his reappointment recommendations to the trustees at their meeting in May.
