Durham, NC -- The impacts of immigration at the local and national levels is the topic of a symposium featuring scholars, policymakers and community members Monday, April 14, at Duke University.
“On the Border of Order: Contemporary U.S. Immigration Principles and Policies” will address issues including the deadlock in U.S. immigration policy, the concerns of competing claims involving human rights, the law, social order and national identity and the economic and civic dimensions of citizenship.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is from noon-5 p.m. at the Doris Duke Center in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens (http://map.duke.edu/?bid=7107).
Panelists include experts from the national and local levels. Among them are Tamar Jacoby, a journalist and author who has played a leading role in advancing immigration reform in Washington; John Herrera, a Latino immigrant elected to municipal office in North Carolina; and Hiroshi Motomura, co-author of a casebook on immigration law.
Free parking is available at the Doris Duke Center. Boxed lunches will be available starting at 11:30 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis.
The event is sponsored by the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke.
