Duke community members who use the Math/Physics Building parking lot or bus stop in the Science Drive traffic circle will need to make alternative plans starting March 9.

The portion of Science Drive that includes the traffic circle, bus stop and entrance to the Math/Physics parking lot will be closed from 6 a.m. March 9 to 6 a.m. March 17 because of a construction project near the Bryan Center. Motorists will not be able to park in the Math/Physics Building lot or use the bus stop for about a week.

“Closing the traffic circle on Science Drive during spring break will enable us to more quickly install a new raised cross-walk from the Bryan Center side of the street to the entry of the French Family Science Center,” said Steve Carrow, a project manager with Duke’s Facilities Management Department (FMD), which is overseeing the project.

During spring break, Duke transit riders should instead use the bus stop in front of the law school on Towerview or the bus stop in the traffic circle on Research Drive near the Levine Science Research Center (LSRC).

For details about bus stop locations and route schedules, visit the Duke’s Parking & Transportation website or call 684-2218.

The temporary road closing is part of a six-month project to upgrade utilities infrastructure and improve the appearance of the Science Drive area. The project, which began in January, involves replacing aging water, steam and electrical lines, and making improvements to the street, sidewalks, crossings and landscaping.

Permit holders in the Math/Physics Building lot will be able to park in the parking garage adjacent to the Bryan Center from March 9 through March 16 by swiping their existing Science parking permit in the card reader. Permit holders will be notified by e-mail from Duke Parking & Transportation Services. Alerts will also be posted on the Parking & Transportation and FMD websites.
