Duke University officials Thursday announced plans to enroll as non-degree students up to 75 eligible undergraduates from colleges and universities affected by Hurricane Katrina. They released the following statement:

In addition to many efforts now being planned by Duke students, faculty and staff to help provide relief to the people affected by Hurricane Katrina, university officials have considered ways in which Duke University might be supportive of students and of institutions of higher education in the region that have temporarily closed their doors. We have developed the following policy that will permit students at an accredited college or university that is temporarily closed to enroll at Duke this semester:

“Duke would be pleased to accommodate up to 75 undergraduate students from those colleges and universities on the Gulf Coast that have had to close their doors. Students in good standing at their home college or university will be eligible to enroll at Duke as visiting non-degree students through Duke’s continuing education division. Credit for any courses taken at Duke will be determined by the home institution.

“Students eligible for this program are sophomores, juniors and seniors from both North Carolina and South Carolina; siblings of current Duke students; and children of Duke faculty, staff or alumni. Eligibility is extended to first-year students who have a sibling currently enrolled at Duke or family living in the area. These students will not be required to pay either Duke’s tuition or room charges (if they live on campus), but they will be expected to pay for food and to provide documentation of existing health insurance or to purchase health insurance during the period of time they spend at Duke. Students must begin classes by Monday, Sept. 12.

“Students who meet the above criteria and are interested in exploring this program are encouraged to call (919) 684-2621. This phone line will be available beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 2, and is open from 8-5 over the Labor Day weekend, including Monday. In the event that any of the Gulf Coast schools should reopen, we would expect their students to be responsive to their guidance about returning to their campus.”
