Bostock Library Set to Open in October
New library, von der Heyden Pavilion to become newest additions to Perkins complex
Friday, April 22, 2005
Durham, N.C. -- Students and faculty will find a changed library landscape when they return to campus in the fall. The Bostock Library and the von der Heyden Pavilion become the newest additions to the Perkins Library complex when they open in October. Ten library departments are moving into the 110,000-square feet Bostock Library. The von der Heyden Pavilion, an open space with informal seating areas, will be the new location of The Perk.
The Bostock Library is the first phase of the project to expand and renovate Perkins Library. When Bostock opens, the main library entrance will move temporarily to the gateway that connects the building to Perkins. The entrance to Perkins Library from the quad will still provide access to the Rare Book Room and the Special Collections Library, as well as the von der Heyden Pavilion.
During the fall 2005 term, all library public services will be relocated from the first floor of Perkins to the first floor of the Bostock Library. This includes Reference and Access and Delivery Services, along with Current Periodicals, Newspapers and Reserves. Electronic Reserves will be available without interruption during the transition from Perkins to Bostock. Once the first floor of Perkins reopens in mid-2006, some services will return there.
Other Perkins departments are also moving to Bostock. The Center for Instructional Technology (CIT), the library’s Information Technology Services and the library instruction classroom will be located on the lower level. The International and Area Studies offices and reading rooms will be on the second floor of Bostock, and the third floor will house Public Documents and Maps.
Most of the book collection will remain at Perkins. Staircases and elevators just inside the new gateway entrance to Bostock will provide access to Perkins stack areas.
