Self-Help Community Development Corporation, a nonprofit that owns the houses, is holding a special open house for Duke employees on Sunday, March 21, from 2 to 4 p.m.
Tasha Logan, a member of Self-Help's Walltown home-ownership team, said the open house is part of an increased marketing effort targeting qualified Duke employees. "We think it's a good program for Duke employees," Logan said. "Home ownership is an excellent way for people to build wealth."
The neighborhood is undergoing major revitalization and the location offers short commutes as well as access to public transportation, Logan added. In 2003, Self-Help completed the renovation of its 50th house in Walltown. About a third of the home owners work at Duke.
The cost of the Self-Help homes ranges from $89,900 to $105,000, but mortgage payments can be as low as $650 a month, because of subsidies. The reasonable mortgages are possible in part because Duke has long had a partnership with Self-Help and has loaned the organization $4 million to improve affordable housing options in Durham.
To qualify, a person must have been employed for two years and make less than 80 percent of the area's median income. The income level varies, depending on family size. For one person, the maximum is $39,950. Candidates must also have a year of good credit and $1,500 in savings.
Interested employees are encouraged to call a new buyer hotline phone number, 956-4675.
During the March 21 open house, Duke employees may view 1113 Berkley St., 1115 Berkley St., 1001 Lancaster St., 1009 Lancaster St. and 1510 Englewood Ave. Self-Help also has a house for sale at 904 Sedgefield St. for qualified Duke police officers.
