Holidays, Flu Reduce Blood Donor Pool
This is the time of year when blood donations are especially needed, and the severe flu season has reduced the usual pool of donors. Your gift of blood is the most generous gift of all. . .

Now that the presents have all been opened, think about giving the most generous gift of all: the gift of life. Kathy Finch, clinical operations director of the Emergency Department at Duke University Medical Center, says blood donations are particularly critical right now. "This is a time of year when people are traveling and involved in lots of other activities. Carving out a couple of hours to make this donation, this gift of life, takes an extra effort." Finch says there's another timely reason to donate now. "In this particular time of the year, we're also facing the flu season and other health issues around the country. The pool of individuals who normally donate may be down just due to flu season." Whole blood and blood components not only help save victims of traffic accidents and other traumatic injuries, but also benefit patients with bleeding disorders and other medical conditions. "The gift, when it's given, serves multiple purposes. That's why it's so important." If you're a healthy adult, schedule a blood donation today. Contact your local office of the American Red Cross and give the gift of life. I'm Cabell Smith for MedMinute.
