James Joseph, a former ambassador to South Africa and current professor in the Sanford Institute, gave the following address to Duke's Samuel DuBois Cook Society:
It was my great privilege to contribute an essay to the new book Nelson Mandela: From Freedom to the Future. The book begins with a tributes by Kofi Anaan and Bill Clinton and concludes with an essay by me on "Promoting peace and practicing diplomacy." It is through the careful reading of Nelson Mandela's own words that those who meet him in this new book will come to understand why even in retirement he remains so widely revered and respected around the world.
