Robert A. Garda, an executive in residence and marketing faculty member at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business for the last five years, has been appointed director of the school's International Center, Dean Douglas T. Breeden announced Monday.

Garda's major roles will be to oversee the center and meet its three main goals. The first is to help students gain an international educational experience through Fuqua's exchange programs and Global Academic Travel Experience (GATE) courses. The second is to help integrate international students into Fuqua, working with the MBAA International Affairs Council, international clubs and the Summer Institute. He will also manage the international students' orientation.

"The Fuqua community is fortunate to have Bob Garda take on this role," Breeden said. "With his international business experience, Bob will help guide the center in its mission to improve the international experience of all our students."

Prior to Fuqua, Garda was chief executive officer of Nashville-based Aladdin Industries, where he spent time in the three main non-U.S. subsidiaries -- Germany, Australia and Brazil. Before Aladdin, he spent 27 years at McKinsey & Company, where for 10 years he was head of the firm's worldwide marketing practice and a member of the firm's recruiting leadership team.

Garda attended Duke on a football scholarship and graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Tau Beta Pi and Omicron Delta Kappa in 1961 with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. He was president of his senior class.

He received his MBA from the Harvard Business School in 1963 and currently serves on four corporate boards and the Duke Engineering Board of Visitors. He is past chairman of Fuqua's board of visitors and is current chairman of the Duke University Athletics' Advisory Council.
