Summer is still two months away, but much of the country is already
experiencing record heat and high humidity levels. For runners and
other outdoor exercisers, this means adjusting to hot-weather
conditions a bit ahead of schedule. Shan James is an exercise
physiologist and program coordinator at the Duke Center for Living.
She advises moving your exercise time to early morning or evening
and wearing loose clothing, along with a protective hat or
sunscreen. She also cautions us to pay attention to the body's
warning signs.
Unless you're sweating for hours and need to replenish sodium
and potassium, she recommends leaving the sports drinks to the
pros.
