Why You Should Stop Taking Herbal Medicines Before Surgery

Many herbal remedies and supplements share a quality that makes them a risk for anyone preparing to have surgery.

The popularity of herbal remedies and supplements continues to rise. Many of these herbal products are made from natural ingredients or combinations of plants and other items found in nature. But we need to remember that these products are not subject to the rigorous testing and regulation that conventional medicines are. And always let your physician or pharmacist know what herbal medications you're taking, especially if you're also taking prescription medicines. David Kroll is a pharmacologist at the Duke Center for Integrative Medicine. He says most herbal products share one quality that makes them risky for anyone facing surgery.
