The 2001 Duke-Durham Campaign will launch its 51 year today (Jan.18) with an event for corporate and community volunteers at E.K. Powe Elementary School that touts the schools's planned science lab. E.K. Powe Principal Elizabeth Shearer will tell volunteers about her school's planned science lab learning space. Duke, which is working with the elementary school and the North Carolina Museum of Life and Science to develop the new science laboratory and outdoor learning environment, has committed to raise 80 percent of the project's $185,000 price tag. The 2000 Duke-Durham Campaign raised $108,403, said Miglarese, now in his second year organizing the effort. This year's goal is to top that figure by the campaign's June 5 completion. "We have made a renewed commitment this year to recruit and involve new volunteers," he said. "And we made a renewed commitment to inform, recognize and solicit our business partners. We know that if they are informed and they know we are in this together as partners, then they are more likely to give." Donations collected during the 2000 Duke-Durham Campaign funded a number of local initiatives, including:

  • Walltown Neighborhood Ministries: $29,500 to renovate the former Knox Street Grocery building and create offices for the five-church coalition working to improve the quality of life for Walltown residents.

  • Transportation: $25,000 gift from Verizon Directories to purchase a van for use by community centers, schools and tutoring programs.

  • The Juanita McNeil and Joseph Alston West End Teen Center: $8,970 to help renovate the West End Community Center's newly acquired building to house the Teen Focus program.

  • Duke-Durham Public Schools Day on Campus: $8,640 to sponsor the March 2, 2000, event, which brought nearly 500 Durham Public Schools students to Duke's campus for a daylong introduction to college life.

  • Teen Issues Troupe: $8,629 to help form a performing arts group for local students who explore social issues relevant to their lives and perform at schools and community centers.

  • Lakewood Elementary School: $7,793 to help fund work by Duke University Retirees Outreach (DURO), a group of former university faculty and staff who have done landscape work at the school, supported the computer lab, organized a health fair, provided a Duke Faculty Dance Program instructor in residence and offered other assistance to the school staff.

  • Durham School of the Arts: $5,916 to fund the school's concert and workshop series performances.

  • Center for Child & Family Policy Studies: $5,000 to support the center's work with the Durham Public Schools to improve pre-kindergarten preparation and prevent early childhood violence.
