That fast weight-loss program your friend recently passed along to you might work well if you need to drop a couple of pounds for the coming weekend, but if you need to lose more than that, and you want to keep it off, a more balanced long-term weight loss program is the way to go. Duke University Medical Center nutritionist Terry Brownlee says gimmick diets that restrict you to only two or three foods might work in the short run, but could have long-term consequences.

Muscle burns more calories than fat. Brownlee says that explains the yo-yo effect many people experience with fast weight-loss programs. They lose muscle tissue, than gain back fat, making it that much harder to lose the next time. Brownlee says for long-term weight loss, nothing beats less food and more exercise. I'm Tom Britt.

Brownlee says a quick weight-loss program might help you get into a smaller dress for the weekend, but it won't keep the pounds off.
